The gunungan is a form from Javanese tradition representing the universe; mortal world below, spiritual realm above.

ASMAT ANCESTOR FIGURE

Carved hardwood. Papua, Indonesia, contemporary.

Inspired by the ancestor figure tradition of the Asmat people of Indonesian Papua. The elongated proportions and geometric surface markings are characteristic of that tradition. Mounted on a custom iron stand. A female figure is also available.

Reclaimed teak. Java, circa 1970s–1980s.

Salvaged from a traditional Javanese joglo. The teak is original to the structure; the carved geometric and scrollwork panels are a contemporary addition.

Each panel: 48cm wide, 249cm high, 5cm deep.

Across Java the bull is a longstanding symbol of strength and prosperity. Hand-carved with characteristic chevron surface patterning.
Available in limited quantity.

Inspired by the mask-making tradition of the Songye people of Central Africa, characterised by the distinctive geometric line work, elongated oval form and square-cut mouth. Each piece hand-carved and unique.
Mounted on a custom iron stand.

Hand-carved with a trapezoidal back referencing the Wajikan - Java’s most enduring geometric form. The curved seat removes to reveal the sculptural base beneath. One of one.
